Proportion: Fourth, Third and Mean Proportionals
Four numbers are in proportion when the first two make the same ratio as the last two; from that one equation come the fourth, third and mean proportionals.
Why this matters
The largest page in the chapter's practice bank, and nearly all of it is one of three formulas: the fourth proportional bc/a, the third proportional b²/a, or the mean proportional √(ab). Learn which is which and most of these questions take one line.
Concept 1 of 4: Four numbers in proportion, and the fourth proportional
Definition
- means , so . and are the extremes, and the means.
- The fourth proportional to is .
- 'What must be added to each number to make them proportional?': add to all four and solve . The terms cancel.
- Letters work the same way: the fourth proportional to is .
Product of extremes equals product of means

Concept 2 of 4: Third proportional
Definition
- is the third proportional to and when , so .
- Order matters: the third proportional to 2 and 6 is 18, but to 6 and 2 it is .
- Given and , find from .

Concept 3 of 4: Mean proportional
Definition
- is the mean proportional between and when , so .
- For decimals and fractions, multiply first, then take the root: .
- Surds often multiply out to a whole number: .
- Given the mean proportional and one number , the other is .

Concept 4 of 4: Continued proportion
Definition
- in continued proportion means , so .
- They form a G.P.: .
- Given , the middle term is the square root of the product: if , then .
- In an expression in , replace by . To check an answer quickly, try a G.P. such as 1, 2, 4.
