Surface Area and Volume: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Surface Area and Volume has 121 practice questions in this bank and no AFCAT past-year question yet, and only 15 of them are marked HARD. Almost every question is one formula and a line of arithmetic, so the marks are lost on reading rather than on method: a radius taken for a diameter, a curved surface taken for a total one, a height used where the slant height belongs. The pages start with the solids that have flat faces, move to the round ones and their slant heights, then set two solids side by side, and end with the story questions, where something is melted, poured, sunk or dug and the volume before equals the volume after.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Cube, Cuboid, Prism and Pyramid
29 questionsVolume, surface area and diagonal of a cube and a cuboid, the open tank and its wetted surface, how a cube's measures scale, and the base area rule for prisms and pyramids.
Cylinder
21 questionsVolume and curved and total surface of a cylinder, a sheet rolled or a rectangle turned into one, hollow pipes, and how two cylinders compare.
Cone and Frustum
20 questionsSlant height, curved and total surface and volume of a cone, a cone cut parallel to its base, and the frustum that is left.
Sphere and Hemisphere
11 questionsSurface and volume of a sphere and a hemisphere, solid or hollow, and how both change when the radius changes.
Combined and Inscribed Solids
19 questionsComparing a cylinder, cone, sphere and hemisphere that share a radius or a height, the largest solid that fits inside another, and the surface or volume of solids joined together or hollowed out.
Melting, Recasting and Displacement
21 questionsA solid melted and recast, a liquid poured, a body sunk in water, earth dug and spread or water pumped through a pipe: the volume stays the same, so set the two volumes equal.
