Mensuration 2D — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Mensuration 2D is the third-largest chapter in CDS Elementary Mathematics, with 197 past-year questions across all twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). It asks for very few formulas and a lot of recognition: a right triangle hidden in three sides, a diagonal that is also a diameter, a shaded region that is one shape minus another. The pages run from single shapes to figures drawn inside or around each other; most of the HARD questions gather in the last three, where circles touch and regions are shaded.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Areas of Triangles
32 PYQsHalf base times height, half the product of two sides and the sine of the angle between them, and Heron's formula when only the three sides are known.
Rectangles, Squares & Other Quadrilaterals
34 PYQsArea and perimeter of rectangles, squares, rhombuses, parallelograms and trapeziums, and quadrilaterals cut into triangles.
Equal Perimeters & Re-bent Wires
17 PYQsA wire keeps its length when it is bent into a new shape, so the perimeter carries over; and for a fixed perimeter the rounder shape encloses more area.
Circumference, Wheels & Rings
19 PYQsCircumference and area of a circle, revolutions of a wheel, how area scales with the radius, and the ring between two concentric circles.
Arcs, Sectors & Segments
25 PYQsArc length and sector area as a fraction of the whole circle, and the segment cut off by a chord as the sector minus a triangle.
Inscribed & Circumscribed Figures
32 PYQsOne figure drawn inside another so that it just touches: squares and circles, a triangle's incircle and circumcircle, figures in a semicircle, and regular polygons.
Touching Circles
13 PYQsCircles that touch each other or the sides of a figure: join the centres, and the distance between them is the sum or the difference of the radii.
Combined & Shaded Regions
25 PYQsAreas of figures built from squares, circles, semicircles and triangles: write the shaded part as whole shapes added and taken away.

Formulas (6)
- Base × height, or two sides and the angle between them · Two sides and the included angle
- Heron's formula — three sides only · Heron's formula
- A right triangle from its perimeter · Area from the sum of the legs
- The equilateral triangle · Equilateral triangle, side a
- Scale the sides, square the area · Similar figures
- Recover the sides first · Sides from altitudes
Watch out for (4)
- The angle must be the one between the two sides→ Base × height, or two sides and the angle between them
- Two sides plus the perimeter is three sides→ Heron's formula — three sides only
- Don't solve for the legs unless you must→ A right triangle from its perimeter
- Altitudes and sides go the opposite way→ Recover the sides first
Formulas (5)
- Rectangles and squares as a pair of equations · Square from its diagonal
- Borders, paths and percentage changes · Path of width w outside
- The rhombus — half the product of the diagonals · Rhombus
- Parallelogram and trapezium · Parallelogram and trapezium
- Cut it into triangles · Quadrilateral split along a diagonal
Watch out for (3)
- The diagonal is an option on purpose→ Rectangles and squares as a pair of equations
- Width counts twice→ Borders, paths and percentage changes
- An unequal-leg trapezium needs two right triangles→ Parallelogram and trapezium
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (2)
- A semicircle's boundary includes the diameter→ The wire keeps its length
- Equal perimeter and equal area flip the answer→ Same perimeter: the rounder shape wins
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Radius or diameter?→ Circumference and wheel revolutions
- Equal-area rings get thinner outward→ Area grows as the square of the radius
- "Cannot be determined" is the bait→ The ring between two circles
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (2)
- Never put degrees into rθ→ Arc length — radius times angle in radians
- Sector is not segment→ The segment — sector minus triangle
Formulas (5)
- Square in a circle, circle in a square · In a circle of radius r
- A triangle's incircle and circumcircle · Inradius and circumradius
- Figures in a semicircle or a quarter circle · Square in a semicircle
- A square or rectangle wedged into a corner · Square in the right angle
- Regular polygons — hexagon and octagon · Hexagon and octagon
Watch out for (2)
- The inradius and the circumradius swap easily→ A triangle's incircle and circumcircle
- Side or perimeter?→ A square or rectangle wedged into a corner
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Reject the root that doesn't fit the figure→ Join the centres
- The sectors add to half a circle, not a whole one→ The gap between touching circles
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (2)
- Read the hatching, not the words→ The whole minus the holes
- Half the lens is a single segment→ Overlaps — lenses and crescents
