Rectangles, Squares & Other Quadrilaterals

Area and perimeter of rectangles, squares, rhombuses, parallelograms and trapeziums, and quadrilaterals cut into triangles.

Why this matters

As large as the triangle page, and a little harder, because the question usually hides a pair of equations (a sum and a product) or asks for a quadrilateral that must first be cut along a diagonal. The rhombus, with its perpendicular diagonals, is the single most repeated shape.

Concept 1 of 5: Rectangles and squares as a pair of equations

A rectangle is two unknowns, so the stem gives two facts: usually the perimeter (a sum) and the area (a product). Treat them as the sum and product of the roots of a quadratic.

Definition

  • Rectangle l×bl \times b: area lblb, perimeter 2(l+b)2(l + b), diagonal l2+b2\sqrt{l^2 + b^2}.
  • Square of side ss: area s2s^2, diagonal s2s\sqrt2, so area =d22= \dfrac{d^2}{2}.
  • Given l+bl + b and lblb: ll and bb are the roots of t2−(l+b)t+lb=0t^2 - (l + b)t + lb = 0.
  • The square drawn on a square's diagonal has twice its area.
  • Areas of squares in ratio p:qp : q means sides (and perimeters) in ratio p:q\sqrt p : \sqrt q.

Square from its diagonal

Area=s2=d22\text{Area} = s^2 = \frac{d^2}{2}

Worked example

A rectangle has perimeter 3434 cm and area 6060 cm2^2. Find its diagonal.

Example 1 · Mensuration 2D · Rectangles, Squares and Other Quadrilaterals

The product of the lengths of the diagonals of a square is 50 square units. What is the length of a side of the square ?

The diagonal is an option on purpose

When a stem gives a square's diagonal (or the product of both diagonals), the diagonal itself is usually one of the options. Read the question again: it asks for the side.

Concept 2 of 5: Borders, paths and percentage changes

A border or a path is the outer rectangle minus the inner one. The trap is the width: a border of width ww takes ww off BOTH ends of each side, so each dimension changes by 2w2w.

Definition

  • Path of width ww outside an l×bl \times b plot: area (l+2w)(b+2w)−lb(l + 2w)(b + 2w) - lb.
  • Border of width ww inside: area lb−(l−2w)(b−2w)lb - (l - 2w)(b - 2w).
  • Covering with tiles: number of tiles =area to coverarea of one tile= \dfrac{\text{area to cover}}{\text{area of one tile}} (convert units first).
  • Length and breadth up by x%x\% and y%y\%: area factor (1+x100)(1+y100)\left(1 + \dfrac{x}{100}\right)\left(1 + \dfrac{y}{100}\right).

Path of width w outside

Path=(l+2w)(b+2w)−lb\text{Path} = (l + 2w)(b + 2w) - lb

Worked example

A garden 2020 m by 1515 m has a path 22 m wide all round it, outside. Find the area of the path.

Example 2 · Mensuration 2D · Rectangles, Squares and Other Quadrilaterals

A rectangular red carpet of size 6 ft ×\times 12 ft has a dark red border 6 inches wide. What is the area of the dark red border ?

Width counts twice

A 11 m path on every side adds 22 m to the length and 22 m to the breadth. Adding 11 m to each gives the wrong outer rectangle.

Concept 3 of 5: The rhombus — half the product of the diagonals

The diagonals of a rhombus cross at right angles and cut each other in half, so the rhombus is four equal right triangles. Their legs are the half-diagonals and their hypotenuse is the side.

Definition

For diagonals d1,d2d_1, d_2 and side aa:

  • Area =12d1d2= \dfrac12 d_1 d_2.
  • a2=(d12)2+(d22)2a^2 = \left(\dfrac{d_1}{2}\right)^2 + \left(\dfrac{d_2}{2}\right)^2, so 4a2=d12+d224a^2 = d_1^2 + d_2^2.
  • Given the sum of the diagonals and the area: d12+d22=(d1+d2)2−4×Aread_1^2 + d_2^2 = (d_1 + d_2)^2 - 4\times\text{Area}.

Rhombus

Area=12d1d2,4a2=d12+d22\text{Area} = \tfrac12 d_1 d_2, \qquad 4a^2 = d_1^2 + d_2^2

Worked example

A rhombus has side 1313 cm and one diagonal 2424 cm. Find its area.

Concept 4 of 5: Parallelogram and trapezium

A parallelogram is base times height, and the height is the slant side times the sine of the angle. A trapezium is the average of the parallel sides times the distance between them; the height usually comes from dropping perpendiculars and using Pythagoras.

Definition

  • Parallelogram with sides a,ba, b and angle θ\theta: area absin⁡θab\sin\theta, which is less than the rectangle abab unless θ=90∘\theta = 90^\circ.
  • A triangle and a parallelogram on the same base with equal areas: the triangle's height is twice the parallelogram's.
  • Trapezium: area =12(sum of parallel sides)×h= \dfrac12(\text{sum of parallel sides})\times h.
  • Isosceles trapezium with parallel sides p>qp > q and legs ll: each leg overhangs by p−q2\dfrac{p - q}{2}, so h=l2−(p−q2)2h = \sqrt{l^2 - \left(\dfrac{p - q}{2}\right)^2}.

Parallelogram and trapezium

Apar=absin⁡θ,Atrap=12(p+q) hA_{\text{par}} = ab\sin\theta, \qquad A_{\text{trap}} = \tfrac12 (p + q)\,h

Worked example

An isosceles trapezium has parallel sides 2020 cm and 1212 cm and each slant side 55 cm. Find its area.

Example 4 · Mensuration 2D · Rectangles, Squares and Other Quadrilaterals

Two parallel sides of a trapezium are 29 cm and 21 cm. Non-parallel sides are equal and each is of length 8.5 cm. What is the area of the trapezium ?

An unequal-leg trapezium needs two right triangles

When the slant sides differ, drop both perpendiculars. The two overhangs add to the difference of the parallel sides, and each leg gives its own Pythagoras equation with the same height. Subtract the two equations to find the overhangs.

Concept 5 of 5: Cut it into triangles

A quadrilateral with four given sides and one right angle is two triangles joined along a diagonal: the right angle gives the diagonal by Pythagoras, and the other triangle then has three known sides. The same habit handles a triangle drawn inside a square: subtract the corner triangles.

Definition

  • Quadrilateral ABCDABCD with ∠B=90∘\angle B = 90^\circ: AC=AB2+BC2AC = \sqrt{AB^2 + BC^2}, then Area=[ABC]+[ACD]\text{Area} = [ABC] + [ACD], the second by Heron.
  • A triangle whose vertices sit on the sides of a square: square minus the three right triangles at the corners.
  • A right angle at a point on a side of a square makes the two corner triangles similar; use the ratio of their hypotenuses.

Quadrilateral split along a diagonal

[ABCD]=[ABC]+[ACD][ABCD] = [ABC] + [ACD]

Worked example

In quadrilateral ABCDABCD, AB=6AB = 6, BC=8BC = 8, CD=24CD = 24, DA=26DA = 26 and ∠ABC=90∘\angle ABC = 90^\circ. Find its area.
