Mensuration 3D — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Mensuration 3D has 171 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, spread across all twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II), and it is one of the most predictable chapters in the paper. Two ideas carry most of it: volume is conserved when a solid is melted, poured or immersed, and like solids scale as the square and cube of their lengths. The pages start with the four basic solids and end with solids fitted inside one another, where half the questions are HARD.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Cubes & Cuboids
20 PYQsVolume and surface area of cubes and cuboids: the walls of a room, blocks joined or cut, and open boxes with walls of some thickness.
Diagonals & Cuboid Identities
16 PYQsThe space diagonal of a cuboid, the longest rod in a room, and the algebraic identities that link the sum of the edges, the diagonal, the surface area and the volume.
Cylinders
16 PYQsVolume, curved surface and total surface of a cylinder, a sheet rolled into a cylinder, and hollow pipes.
Cones
18 PYQsVolume and surface of a cone, the right triangle formed by its radius, height and slant height, and cones made by rolling a sector or turning a triangle.
Spheres, Hemispheres & Shells
10 PYQsVolume and surface of a sphere and a hemisphere, hollow shells and their mass, and the circle in which a plane cuts a sphere.
Frustums & Combined Solids
22 PYQsThe frustum of a cone (buckets, glasses, lamp shades), a cone cut parallel to its base, and solids built from a cylinder, a cone and a hemisphere.
Melting & Recasting
18 PYQsA solid melted and recast into other shapes keeps its volume: find how many pieces, the new dimension, or how the surface area changes.
Water — Immersion, Flow & Rainfall
17 PYQsA solid dropped into water raises the level by its own volume; water flowing through a pipe or a river, or falling as rain, is a volume that must be converted between cm, m, litres and hectares.
Scaling & Comparing Solids
19 PYQsHow volume and surface change when a solid is scaled, how the ratio of two cones or cylinders follows from their radii and heights, and what equal volume or equal surface forces.
Solids Inside Solids
15 PYQsOne solid fitted inside another so that it just touches: a cube in a sphere, a cylinder round a sphere, a sphere in a cone, and balls or cones touching each other.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (2)
- Round the cans up, never down→ Walls, edges and faces
- The open top has no wall→ Open boxes and wall thickness
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (1)
- The largest slice is not a face→ The space diagonal
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (2)
- Volume uses h, surface uses l→ Radius, height, slant height — one right triangle
- Halve the vertical angle first→ The vertical angle and the axial section
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Slant height uses the difference of the radii→ The frustum
- Height from the base, or from the apex?→ A cone cut parallel to its base
- The joining circle is not a surface→ Solids joined together
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (1)
- Litres, cubic metres and cubic centimetres differ by thousands→ Rainfall and flow — watch the units
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (1)
- An increase of p% is a factor of 1 + p/100→ Similar solids: lengths, squares, cubes
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (1)
- Measure from the table, not from the lower centres→ Balls and cones that touch
