Polynomials — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Polynomials has 79 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, from twenty sittings between 2016 (II) and 2026 (II). The HCF and LCM of polynomials alone accounts for 25 of them, and almost every question — HCF, remainder or factor — comes down to factorising cleanly and substituting a root. The pages run from degree and zeros through the remainder and factor theorems to factorisation, and end with HCF and LCM.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Degree, Zeros and Coefficients
8 PYQsDegrees add when polynomials are multiplied and can drop when they are added; the zeros of a polynomial are tied to its coefficients by sums and products.
The Remainder Theorem
15 PYQsThe remainder when f(x) is divided by x − a is f(a); on division by a quadratic the remainder is linear and is fixed by its values at the two roots.
The Factor Theorem
12 PYQsx − a is a factor of f(x) exactly when f(a) = 0; a quadratic factor gives one such equation for each of its roots.
Factorisation of Polynomials
19 PYQsFactorise a cubic by finding one root and dividing, a product of four brackets by pairing them, and everything else by spotting a standard identity.
HCF and LCM of Polynomials
25 PYQsFactorise every polynomial; the HCF is the product of the common factors to their lowest power, the LCM of all factors to their highest power, and HCF × LCM equals the product of two polynomials.
