Quadrilaterals — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Quadrilaterals has 54 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, in 16 of the twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). Parallelograms and midpoint figures alone account for 14 of them, and almost every question is settled by drawing a diagonal and working with the triangles it makes. The pages start with any quadrilateral, move through the special shapes, and end with cyclic quadrilaterals.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Any Quadrilateral: Diagonals, Triangles and Areas
11 PYQsA diagonal splits any quadrilateral into two triangles, so triangle rules — the triangle inequality, Pythagoras, area on a common base — answer most questions.
Parallelograms and Midpoint Figures
14 PYQsA parallelogram's opposite sides are equal and parallel and its diagonals bisect each other; joining the midpoints of any quadrilateral's sides makes one.
Rhombus and Kite
8 PYQsA rhombus's diagonals bisect each other at right angles; a kite's diagonals are also perpendicular, so both have area half the product of the diagonals.
Trapeziums
8 PYQsIn a trapezium the diagonals cut each other in the ratio of the parallel sides, and the line joining the midpoints of the legs is their average.
Cyclic Quadrilaterals
13 PYQsA quadrilateral whose vertices lie on one circle; its opposite angles add to 180°, and that rule decides which familiar shapes can be cyclic.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- One triangle is not enough→ Lengths through a diagonal
- Heights, not squares→ Rules that hold in every quadrilateral
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- sin 150° is ½→ Sides, angles and area
- The midpoint figure's perimeter is the WHOLE sum of the diagonals→ Pieces cut by diagonals and midpoints
- A rhombus inside a rectangle, not a square→ Pieces cut by diagonals and midpoints
Formulas (1)
Watch out for (2)
- Half-diagonals are the legs→ Diagonals, side and area
- The side alone can be enough→ Diagonals, side and area
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- Lengths go straight, areas go squared→ Diagonals and the four triangles
- Which sides are parallel?→ Diagonals and the four triangles
- Equal legs do not make it a trapezium→ The midline and special trapeziums
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- OPPOSITE angles, not adjacent ones→ Opposite angles and which shapes are cyclic
- The vertex order in a similarity statement→ Similar triangles in a cyclic quadrilateral
