Time, Speed and Distance — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Time, Speed and Distance has 75 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, across all twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). Average speed and the speed–time ratio alone account for 22 of them, and almost every question rests on two ideas: total distance over total time, and relative speed as a sum or a difference. The pages start with average speed and speed-change equations, move to chasing, meeting and trains, and end with boats, races and clocks.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Average Speed and Speed–Time Ratios
22 PYQsAverage speed is total distance over total time, and over a fixed distance the times are in the inverse ratio of the speeds.
Speed Changes and Equations
9 PYQs'Had the speed been x faster, it would have taken y less' gives d/v − d/(v + x) = y, a quadratic in the speed.
Relative Speed: Chasing and Meeting
13 PYQsTwo movers going the same way close their gap at the difference of their speeds; going towards each other, at the sum.
Trains: Length and Crossing
14 PYQsA train passing an object must cover its own length plus the object's length, at the speed relative to that object.
Boats and Streams
7 PYQsDownstream speed is boat + stream, upstream is boat − stream; the boat's speed is their average and the stream's is half their difference.
Races
5 PYQsIn a race the runners' speeds are in the ratio of the distances they cover in the same time; a start or a beat is just a difference in distance or time.
Clocks and Angles
5 PYQsThe minute hand turns 6° a minute and the hour hand 0.5°, so the minute hand gains 5.5° every minute.

Watch out for (2)
- Not the average of the speeds→ Average speed
- Early plus late→ Speed and time over a fixed distance
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Slower means more time→ Faster speed, less time
- Solve for the reciprocals→ Two conditions, two unknowns
Watch out for (2)
- After the theft or after the start?→ Chasing: the same direction
- Distance from which end?→ Meeting: opposite directions

Watch out for (2)
- Clearing the last stone→ Passing poles, platforms and bridges
- A man in a train is a point→ Trains passing moving objects
Formulas (1)
Watch out for (1)
- Half the difference, not the difference→ Downstream and upstream
Watch out for (1)
- The hour hand moves too→ Angles between the hands
