Scientific Notation and Logarithms
Scientific notation keeps very large and very small numbers under control; a logarithm is the exponent that turns its base into a given number, and its laws turn products into sums.
Why this matters
Calculations in scientific notation appeared in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2022, and logarithms in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2026. The 2026 question needed only the definition of log₁₀; the older ones used the laws to simplify or rearrange.
Concept 1 of 4: Scientific notation and orders of magnitude
Definition
A number is in scientific notation when written with and an integer.
- Multiply: multiply the parts and add the exponents. Divide: divide and subtract.
- Renormalise at the end: (the exponent goes up by one when is divided by 10).
- Square root: first make the exponent even. .
- The order of magnitude is the power of ten that sets the size: is of order .
Scientific notation
- the digit part (mantissa)
- the power of ten, a whole number

Concept 2 of 4: Logarithm: definition, log₁₀ and ln
Definition
For a base , , and a number : is the exponent with .
- , , and .
- or is the common logarithm (base 10): , .
- is the natural logarithm, base : , .
- The logarithm of zero or of a negative number is not defined. A negative logarithm only means .
Definition of the logarithm
- the base, positive and not 1
- the argument, positive

Concept 3 of 4: Laws of logarithms and change of base
Definition
For positive and any valid base:
- Product: .
- Quotient: .
- Power: (also for roots: ).
- Change of base: , using any common base (10, or 2).
- There is no law for .

Concept 4 of 4: Solving exponential equations and rearranging log relations
Definition
- Common base: if both sides are powers of the same base, set the exponents equal.
- Take logs: gives for .
- is always positive, so with has no solution.
- Undoing a log relation: means ; with it means .
- Harder equations (a substitution, or a logarithm of an expression in ) are in Equations and Inequalities.
