Differential Equations — JEE Mains Mathematics
Differential Equations has 180 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 71 of them are linear equations. The pages start with forming an equation from a family of curves, then solve by separating, by the substitution y = vx and by an integrating factor. Later pages cover equations that only become linear after a substitution, and what to do with a solution once you have it. The last two pages find the equation inside an integral, a limit or a geometric condition.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Forming a Differential Equation
8 PYQsGoing from a family of curves, or a given solution, to the differential equation it satisfies: eliminate the arbitrary constants by differentiating, then read off the order and degree.
Separating the Variables
31 PYQsSolving an equation by putting every y on one side and every x on the other, then integrating both sides; including the cases that separate only after a substitution or after spotting an exact differential.
Homogeneous Equations
24 PYQsEquations where the slope depends only on the ratio y/x, solved by putting y = vx; and the variants that need x = vy, a shift of origin, or a power substitution first.
Linear Equations: The Integrating Factor
27 PYQsSolving dy/dx + P(x)y = Q(x) by multiplying through by the integrating factor, the exponential of the integral of P, which turns the left side into the derivative of a product.
Integrating Factors in Disguise
22 PYQsLinear equations where the integrating factor is not found by a standard integral: the left side is already the derivative of a product, or P is the derivative of the logarithm of some function.
Equations Reducible to Linear
19 PYQsEquations that become linear after a change of viewpoint: treating x as the unknown function of y, dividing a Bernoulli equation by a power of y, or substituting for a function of y such as tan y or e to the power sin y.
Using a Linear Solution
22 PYQsQuestions where solving the linear equation is only the first half: the constant is fixed by a limit instead of a point, or the solution is then maximised, differentiated, integrated or compared with another solution.
Equations Hidden in Integrals and Limits
14 PYQsQuestions that never print a differential equation: a function is defined by an integral of itself, by a limit, or by a rule on its derivatives, and differentiating is what produces the equation.
Curves and Growth from Rates
13 PYQsSetting up the equation from words: a curve described by its tangent, normal or the area under it, and a quantity whose rate of change is proportional to itself or to its distance from a fixed value.
