Limits and Continuity — JEE Mains Mathematics
Limits and Continuity has 136 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 38 of them ask where a function is continuous or differentiable. The first six pages evaluate limits, from the standard forms and series expansions to limits at infinity and limits that are really derivatives or integrals. The last two pages turn to continuity: finding the constants that make a function continuous, and counting the points where it breaks.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Standard Limits and Algebraic Forms
24 PYQsLimits of the form 0/0 settled by the standard trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic limits, or by factorising and rationalising.
Series Expansions and Unknown Constants
22 PYQsEvaluating limits by writing each function as the first few terms of its series, and choosing unknown constants so that a limit exists.
Exponential Limits (1 to the Power Infinity)
10 PYQsLimits of a base tending to 1 raised to a power tending to infinity, all settled by one formula.
Limits at Infinity and Limits of Sums
17 PYQsLimits as x or n grows without bound: comparing the fastest-growing terms, summing a finite series before taking the limit, and turning a sum into an integral.
Limits via Derivatives and Integrals
15 PYQsLimits that are derivatives in disguise, and limits of integrals with a variable limit, settled by differentiating.
Greatest Integer and One-Sided Limits
10 PYQsLimits involving the greatest integer function, the modulus or expressions that behave differently on each side of a point, found from the left and right separately.
Continuity at a Point
20 PYQsA function is continuous at a point when its left limit, right limit and value there all agree; most questions find the constants that make that happen.
Counting Discontinuities and Non-Differentiability
18 PYQsCounting the points where a function breaks or has a corner: jumps of the greatest integer function, compositions, and functions defined as a limit.
