Current Electricity — JEE Mains Physics
Current Electricity has 230 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 98 of them ask for a number rather than an option. Nearly half come with a figure, most of them circuits, so the first skill is redrawing: name the junctions, merge points joined by plain wire, and look for symmetry or a balanced bridge before writing any equation. After that, most questions need one of three tools: Ohm's law with the series and parallel rules, Kirchhoff's two laws, or a ratio at balance in a meter bridge or potentiometer. Marks are lost on small things: a cell's internal resistance left out of the total, a stretched wire's resistance scaled by n instead of n², a real voltmeter read as if it were ideal, or a current given to a capacitor branch in steady state.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Current, Drift Velocity and Current Density
18 PYQsCurrent is the rate at which charge crosses a section, I = dq/dt; inside a wire it is carried by free electrons drifting slowly against the field, so I = neAv, where v is the drift speed.
Resistance, Resistivity and Temperature
35 PYQsA conductor's resistance is R = ρl/A: the resistivity ρ belongs to the material and its temperature, while the length and area belong to the shape, so stretching changes R but never ρ.
Equivalent Resistance: Series, Parallel and Symmetry
31 PYQsResistances in series add and in parallel add as reciprocals; a network that is neither is first redrawn, by merging points joined by plain wire and by using symmetry to find points at the same potential.
Kirchhoff's Laws and the Wheatstone Bridge
29 PYQsCurrent entering a junction equals current leaving it, and the potential changes around any closed loop add to zero; dividers and the balanced Wheatstone bridge are the shortcuts these two laws give.
Cells: EMF, Internal Resistance and Combinations
25 PYQsA real cell is an emf ε in series with an internal resistance r, so it drives I = ε/(R + r) and its terminal voltage ε − Ir falls as it delivers more current.
Meters, Meter Bridge and Potentiometer
33 PYQsA real voltmeter or ammeter changes the circuit it measures; the meter bridge and the potentiometer avoid this by measuring at balance, when no current flows through the galvanometer.
Electrical Power and Heating
30 PYQsA resistor turns electrical energy into heat at the rate P = VI = I²R = V²/R; pick the form that holds fixed what the circuit holds fixed, current in series and voltage in parallel.
Capacitors and Inductors in DC Circuits
29 PYQsIn a DC circuit a capacitor ends up blocking current and an inductor ends up as a plain wire; just after a switch closes it is the other way round, and in between both change exponentially with time constant RC or L/R.
