Alkanes — MHT-CET Chemistry
Alkanes in MHT-CET Chemistry has no HARD question in thirty-five, and most of its MODERATE ones are the same two reactions asked in different words. Learn the series formula and the isomer counts, the Wurtz pairings, what a Grignard reagent does with any active hydrogen, and why bromine picks the tertiary H. Every PYQ is tagged.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
The Alkane Series: Formula, Isomers, Carbon Types and Boiling Points
14 PYQsAlkanes are saturated hydrocarbons CₙH₂ₙ₊₂; each member differs from the next by CH₂ (14 g/mol), the number of structural isomers grows with n, and boiling point rises with chain length and falls with branching.
Making Alkanes: Wurtz, Grignard Reagents and Decarboxylation
17 PYQsAlkanes are made by joining two alkyl halides with sodium (Wurtz), by giving a Grignard reagent a proton from water, an alcohol or ammonia, by heating a sodium carboxylate with soda-lime, and by hydrogenating CO over nickel.
Free-Radical Halogenation: Reactivity and Selectivity
4 PYQsIn UV light a halogen substitutes an H on an alkane through free radicals; fluorine reacts most violently and iodine least, and bromine is so selective that it almost always replaces the H on the most substituted carbon.
