Superposition of Waves — MHT-CET Physics
Superposition of Waves has 123 past-year questions in the MHT-CET bank, about one in five HARD, and most of the HARD ones are strings, pipes and sonometers. It starts from the progressive wave y = A sin(ωt − kx) and what adding two of them gives: a louder or softer wave, a stationary wave, or beats. Then come the systems that trap stationary waves — strings, and open and closed pipes — and the Doppler effect. Every PYQ is tagged.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Progressive Waves: the Wave Equation, Phase and Particle Velocity
34 PYQsA progressive wave y = A sin(ωt − kx) carries a disturbance at v = ω/k = fλ; two points Δx apart differ in phase by 2πΔx/λ, and each particle oscillates with a top speed Aω that is quite separate from the wave's speed.
Superposition of Two Waves
8 PYQsTwo waves of the same frequency add into one of the same frequency whose amplitude depends on their phase difference: R² = a₁² + a₂² + 2a₁a₂cos φ — largest when in step, smallest when opposite.
Stationary Waves and Vibrating Strings
36 PYQsTwo equal waves running opposite ways make a stationary wave, y = 2A sin kx cos ωt, with fixed nodes λ/2 apart; a string fixed at both ends fits a whole number of loops, so it vibrates only at n = (p/2L)√(T/μ).
Organ Pipes, the Resonance Tube and the Doppler Effect
23 PYQsAn open pipe has antinodes at both ends and sounds every harmonic of v/2L; a closed pipe has a node at the closed end and sounds only the odd harmonics of v/4L; end corrections lengthen the air column, and a moving source or listener shifts the frequency heard.
Beats, and Tuning a Sonometer
22 PYQsTwo sounds of slightly different frequency drift in and out of step, so their loudness swells and fades |f₁ − f₂| times a second; with a sonometer, whose frequency goes as 1/length, beats pin down a tuning fork's frequency.
