Data Interpretation: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Data Interpretation has 219 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank: 137 from the 2024 shifts, 75 from 2023 and only 7 from 2025. Of these, 168 are EASY and 51 MODERATE, with none HARD, and 108 come with a chart instead of a printed table. The chart type matters less than it looks, because a bar graph and a table ask for the same arithmetic, so these pages are cut by the work a question asks for. Almost every question is two or three lines long, which makes this a chapter for banking marks quickly: add before you divide, keep the base of every percentage straight, and let a known fraction or 1% of the total replace the long division.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Reading Tables and Graphs
25 PYQsMost data questions start with the same two moves: pick the right cells, then add or subtract them, keeping the unit printed above the table.
Averages from Data
42 PYQsAn average from a table is a total divided by the number of entries, and two averages over the same number of entries can be compared through their totals alone.
Ratios from Data
30 PYQsA ratio from a table compares two totals in the order the question names them, cut down to lowest terms.
One Value as a Percentage of Another
34 PYQs"A is what percent of B" is A divided by B, times 100, and the value after the word "of" is always the base.
Percentage Change and Percent More or Less
23 PYQsA percentage change, or a "percent more than", is the difference divided by the base, and the base is the earlier value or the value after the word "than".
Pie Charts and Shares of a Total
48 PYQsA pie chart, or a table of percentage shares, splits one total into parts; each part is its share times the total, and 100% of the total is the full 360° of the circle.
Two-Step Share Problems
17 PYQsA two-step question first finds a group as a share of a total, then splits that group again by a ratio or a second percentage, or runs the same chain backwards from a known part.

- Adding a printed Total row again→ Totals and differences of totals from a table
- Counting the row that equals the limit→ Picking out the rows that meet a condition
- Reading second highest as the second row→ Picking out the rows that meet a condition
- Reading a cumulative column as a band→ Reading a cumulative and-above table

Formulas (4)
Watch out for (5)
- Dividing by the wrong count→ Average of a row or a column
- Rounding the entries before adding→ Average of a row or a column
- Comparing totals when the counts differ→ Comparing or subtracting two averages
- Counting the entry that equals the average→ Values above, below or closest to the average
- Taking the plain mean of two averages→ Combined average of two or more groups
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (4)
- Writing the ratio the wrong way round→ Ratio of two totals in lowest terms
- Stopping before lowest terms→ Ratio of two totals in lowest terms
- Dividing averages that cover different counts→ How many times, and ratios of averages
- Counting only the "only" row→ Finding each part before taking the ratio

Formulas (4)
Watch out for (6)
- Comparing percentages across different totals→ From a percentage share to a value
- Rounding each share before adding→ From a percentage share to a value
- Reading degrees as percentages→ Degrees and central angles in a pie chart
- Using 100 where 360 belongs→ Degrees and central angles in a pie chart
- Dividing by the wanted share instead of the known one→ From one known share to the total or another share
- Comparing sectors of charts with different totals directly→ Comparing sectors without working out the total
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (4)
- Adding ratios from different groups→ A ratio or a percentage inside a share
- Applying the second percentage to the whole total→ A ratio or a percentage inside a share
- Undoing only one step of the chain→ Working back to a missing total
- Reading 20% less as 20% of→ Working back to a missing total
