Mensuration 3D: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Mensuration 3D has 160 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, 87 of them from the 2025 shifts, and at least one turned up in 99 of the 113 shifts. A hundred and twenty are EASY, forty MODERATE and none HARD, so the marks go to whoever recalls the right formula first and keeps the arithmetic short: Tier I gives you about 36 seconds a question. Two habits carry most of the chapter. With π as 22/7, cancel the 7 before you multiply. And when a question asks only how many times, what ratio or what percentage, work with scale factors and never compute a full volume.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Cubes and Cuboids
31 PYQsA cuboid holds length times breadth times height, and its surface is six rectangles in three equal pairs. A cube is the cuboid whose three edges are equal.
Prisms and Pyramids
23 PYQsA prism holds its base area times its height, and its side faces together are the base perimeter times the height. A pyramid on the same base and height holds one third as much.
Cylinders
22 PYQsA cylinder is a prism with a circle for its base: it holds πr²h, its curved side is 2πrh, and closing both ends adds two circles.
Cones
19 PYQsA cone holds one third of the cylinder on the same base and height, its curved surface is π times the radius times the slant height, and radius, height and slant height form one right triangle.
Spheres, Hemispheres and Shells
21 PYQsA sphere holds four thirds of π r³ and its surface is 4πr². A hemisphere is half of each, plus a flat circle when it is solid, and a hollow ball is the difference of two balls.
Scaling and Comparing Solids
23 PYQsWhen every length of a solid is multiplied by k, its areas are multiplied by k² and its volume by k³; two different solids are compared by writing both formulas and cancelling what they share.
Melting, Recasting and Water
21 PYQsMelting a solid into new shapes, pouring a liquid from one vessel into others, or sinking a stone in water never changes the volume, so you set the volume before equal to the volume after.
