Clock: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Clock is a small chapter of 147 practice questions, about half of them EASY, and none yet from an AFCAT paper. Almost all of it grows from two speeds: the minute hand turns 6° a minute and the hour hand half a degree, so the minute hand gains 5.5° every minute. That one fact gives the angle at any time, the moments when the hands meet or stand at a given angle, and how often that happens in a day. The hardest questions run the angle formula backwards and need both of its answers. Mirror images and faulty clocks need no angles at all: one is a subtraction from 11:60, the other a rate per hour.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
How Fast the Hands Turn
17 questionsThe minute hand turns 6° a minute and the hour hand half a degree, so the minute hand gains 5.5° on the hour hand every minute.
The Angle Between the Hands at a Given Time
43 questionsPlace each hand in degrees from 12 and subtract: the shortcut is the size of 30 times the hour minus 5.5 times the minutes, and the answer is the smaller of the two angles.
When the Hands Meet, Point Opposite or Form an Angle
30 questionsTurn the angle formula round: the hands are θ degrees apart at 2/11 of (30h ± θ) minutes past h, and in 12 hours each position comes round a fixed number of times.
Mirror Images of a Clock
20 questionsA mirror standing beside a clock swaps left and right, so the image time is 11:60 minus the real time, and the same subtraction takes an image back to the real time.
Clocks That Gain or Lose Time
37 questionsA faulty clock drifts by a fixed amount each hour: multiply to find what it shows, divide to find when it is right, and use its rate to turn shown time into real time.

The speeds of the two hands2 rows
| Hand | One full turn takes | Degrees per hour | Degrees per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minute hand | 60 minutes | ||
| Hour hand | 12 hours | Half a degree a minute: in 20 minutes the hour hand moves 10°, a third of the way to the next number. |
Watch out for (6)
- 6° a minute is the minute hand→ The speeds of the two hands
- Per hour or per minute→ The speeds of the two hands
- The hour hand is past its number→ How far a hand turns in a given time
- Count the hours forward→ How far a hand turns in a given time
- Use 5.5, not 6→ The minute hand gains 5.5° a minute
- A lap takes more than 60 minutes→ The minute hand gains 5.5° a minute
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (7)
- Count the short way→ The angle on the hour
- The hour hand has moved→ The angle at any time
- Half past is not on the number→ The angle at any time
- Above 180 is the long way round→ Above 180°: the smaller angle and the reflex angle
- Reflex is 360 minus the smaller angle→ Above 180°: the smaller angle and the reflex angle
- Work the angles, do not judge the times→ Naming, comparing and changing angles
- Near 90 still needs the exact value→ Naming, comparing and changing angles

Reference tables (1)
How many times a position comes round5 rows
| Position | In 12 hours | In 24 hours | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinciding | 11 | 22 | every min Not 12 in 12 hours: the meeting between 11 and 12 is 12:00 itself. |
| Opposite () | 11 | 22 | every min |
| In a straight line (together or opposite) | 22 | 44 | every min |
| At right angles | 22 | 44 | every min Not 48 in a day: 3:00 and 9:00 are each shared by two neighbouring hours. |
| Any other angle between and | 22 | 44 | twice in each lap |
Watch out for (6)
- Eleven meetings, not twelve→ When the hands coincide or point opposite
- A straight line includes together→ When the hands coincide or point opposite
- Drop a value outside the hour→ When the hands are at a given angle
- Minute spaces are not degrees→ When the hands are at a given angle
- Count a stretch by listing→ How many times a position comes round
- 44 right angles a day, not 48→ How many times a position comes round
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Subtract from 11:60, not 12:00→ The image time is 11:60 minus the real time
- 60 minutes is the next hour→ The image time is 11:60 minus the real time
- The image is not 6 hours off→ Finding the real time from the image
- Move the real clock, not the image→ Times after 11, time passing and other twists
- There is no 0 on the dial→ Times after 11, time passing and other twists
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (7)
- Carry into the hour→ What a gaining or losing clock shows
- Count the real hours across noon→ What a gaining or losing clock shows
- A third of an hour is 20 minutes→ When a fast or slow clock shows the right time
- A fast clock that gains never catches up→ When a fast or slow clock shows the right time
- The rate is per real hour→ Turning shown time into real time
- An hour of gain is not enough→ When a faulty clock is right again
- Both gain: subtract the rates→ When a faulty clock is right again
