Time and Work: AFCAT Numerical Ability
Time and Work has 340 questions in this bank, and 18 of them are AFCAT past-year questions from 2015 to 2019, more than half of those about people working together. Behind every story, whether it is two friends, a machine, a crew of labourers or a leaking tank, sits one idea: a job done at a steady rate, so the work done is rate × time. The notes build that idea in the order the questions use it, from one person's rate to crews that change halfway, and they slow down where most marks are lost: the last stage of a job, when someone leaves, a cycle ends or a pipe is closed.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Work as a Rate, and Efficiency
51 questionsTurn every work statement into a rate, the share of the job done in one day or hour, and read efficiency as the opposite of time.
Working Together: Adding Rates
67 questionsPeople working together add their daily rates. Subtract a known rate to find an unknown one, and use pair totals or efficiency ratios when single times are not given.
Someone Leaves or Takes Over
16 questionsWhen people join or leave partway through a job, cut it into stages, find the work done in each, and give what is left to whoever is still working.
Working on Alternate Days, and Other Work Patterns
25 questionsWhen people take turns, or work and rest in a fixed pattern, count whole cycles first, then finish the last part day by day, keeping track of who works next.
Man-Days, Man-Hours and Groups of Workers
78 questionsMeasure a job in man-days or man-hours: more workers need fewer days, longer working days need fewer days, and a bigger job needs more of both.
When Workers Leave or Join Mid-Job
75 questionsTake the man-days already done away from the job, give what is left to the team now on site, and compare with the plan only when the question asks.
Pipes and Cisterns
28 questionsA pipe is a worker whose job is filling a tank: filling pipes add their rates, and emptying pipes and leaks take theirs away.

Formulas (4)
Watch out for (6)
- Scale the part the right way→ Part of the work in some days
- 'More days' is what is left→ Part of the work in some days
- Of the remaining work→ Work done in stages, in percentages
- More efficient is not the same percentage less time→ Efficiency and time
- The ratio of times turns round→ Efficiency and time
- Efficiency scales the rate→ Output per hour: machines and shifts
Formulas (5)
Watch out for (6)
- Never add or average the days→ Adding rates
- Subtract rates, not days→ One person's time from the joint time
- Halve the total→ Pairs working together
- Which way the ratio runs→ Efficiency ratios with a joint time
- Done, or left?→ Work done in a given time, and each share
- Pay follows the work, not the days→ Work done in a given time, and each share
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- More days, or days in all?→ Work in stages: one stops, another finishes
- Use the rate of whoever is left→ Work in stages: one stops, another finishes
- The one who left worked fewer days→ Leaving a few days before the end
Watch out for (4)
- Do not run the cycles past the job→ Two people on alternate days
- The starter works first in the last cycle→ Two people on alternate days
- Rest after the end does not count→ Turns, helpers and rest days
- A helper's day is one day per block→ Turns, helpers and rest days
Formulas (5)
Watch out for (5)
- More workers, fewer days→ Man-days: workers × days
- Hours a day are part of the work→ Man-hours: when the working day changes
- Output goes under the labour→ When the amount of work changes
- 'Or' is not 'and'→ Converting men, women and children
- Equal work, not equal daily work→ Two mixed teams: solve for one worker
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (6)
- Take away the work already done→ Work left after the team changes
- Extra is not the same as more→ Extra days against the plan
- Joining saves days→ Extra days against the plan
- Count from the workers still there→ Keeping to the deadline
- Efficiency changes the team, not the job→ Hours, efficiency and team size change together
- Each stage at its own hours→ Hours, efficiency and team size change together
Formulas (4)
Watch out for (5)
- Take the outlet away→ Filling and emptying together
- A negative net rate never fills→ Filling and emptying together
- The leak is slower than both times→ Finding a leak from the delay
- Leave out the closed pipe→ Pipes opened or closed partway
- The tank can fill partway through the cycles→ Capacity, pipes in turn and mixtures
