Surds and Indices — CDS Elementary Mathematics
Surds, Indices and Simplification has 82 past-year questions in CDS Elementary Mathematics, across all twenty-one sittings from 2016 (II) to 2026 (II). The same few surds come back year after year — 7 + 4√3, 5 + 2√6, the telescoping sum of 1/(√n + √(n + 1)) — so recognising them is most of the work. The pages go from fractions and decimals through the index laws and exponential equations to surds, and end with continued fractions and nested radicals.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Fractions and Decimals
11 PYQsConvert recurring decimals to fractions, compare fractions by cross-multiplying or by their distance from 1, and simplify decimals by spotting squares.
Laws of Indices
16 PYQsPowers of the same base multiply by adding exponents and nest by multiplying them; when several powers are equal, call the common value k.
Exponential Equations
8 PYQsAn equation in a^x becomes a quadratic when you put t = a^x, and a sum of like powers becomes one power once the common factor is taken out.
Square Roots of Surds
11 PYQsA surd a + 2√b is a perfect square (√m + √n)² when m + n = a and mn = b, which makes its square root and its reciprocal easy.
Rationalising and Conjugate Pairs
11 PYQsMultiplying by the conjugate removes a surd from a denominator; a surd and its conjugate have a rational sum and product, and a chain of rationalised terms telescopes.
Equations with Surds
7 PYQsA ratio of the form (√A + √B)/(√A − √B) is untangled by componendo and dividendo; other surd equations clear by factorising or isolating one root and squaring.
Simplifying Surd Expressions
6 PYQsWhen x is built from cube roots, name the cube root and use its cube; when an expression holds square roots of squares, remember √(a²) = |a|.
Continued Fractions and Nested Radicals
12 PYQsA finite continued fraction is evaluated from the bottom up and decomposed by repeatedly splitting off whole parts; an infinite nest equals itself, which gives a quadratic.

Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Read where the bar starts→ Recurring decimals as fractions
- The remainder, not the total→ Comparing fractions and fractions of a whole
- Count decimal places when you take a root→ Simplifying decimal expressions
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- The base must not be 1→ The index laws
- Reciprocals of the exponents, not the exponents→ When several powers are equal
- Raise every number to the same power→ Comparing powers and roots
Watch out for (2)
- Reject non-positive t→ Substitute t = a^x
- Answer what is asked→ Take out the common power
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The principal root is positive→ The square root of a + 2√b
- Square root first, then the reciprocal→ A surd plus its reciprocal
Watch out for (2)
- Sign of a difference→ Conjugate pairs x and y
- Find the first and last terms exactly→ Telescoping sums
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- k + 1 over k − 1, not the other way→ Componendo and dividendo
- Square the ratio at the end→ Factorising with square roots
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Move the whole number before cubing→ Expressions built from cube roots
- √(a²) is not a→ Square roots of squares and products of sums
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Invert before splitting→ Continued fractions
- Drop the negative root→ Infinite nested radicals
