Kinematics: CDS Physics
Kinematics and Motion has 18 past-year questions in CDS General Knowledge, from 2018 (II) to 2026 (II): 3 EASY, 12 MODERATE and 3 HARD. Most are either a short sum with friendly numbers or a single idea, and seven have come since 2023. The marks go to students who know which formula leaves out the quantity they were not given, and who keep distance and displacement apart: a circular track asked twice turns on exactly that. The HARD questions are all about vectors, so learn the resultant formula and how to split a vector into its parts.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Motion in a Straight Line
10 PYQsDistance and displacement, average speed, the three equations of uniform acceleration, and what the slope and the area of a motion graph tell you.
Motion in a Plane
8 PYQsAdding vectors and splitting them into components, a body falling or launched sideways under gravity, and why uniform circular motion is accelerated.

| Graph and shape | What it means |
|---|---|
| Distance-time, horizontal line | The body is at restQ CDS 2019 (II): for a body at rest, the time-distance graph is horizontal. |
| Distance-time, steeper part | Higher speed in that partQ CDS 2023 (II): three parts of one journey are ranked by the slope of each part. |
| Velocity-time, horizontal line | Constant velocity, zero acceleration |
| Velocity-time, slope | Acceleration |
| Velocity-time, area under the line | DisplacementQ CDS 2023 (I): the area under a velocity-time graph gives the net displacement. |
Watch out for (8)
- Half a lap gives the diameter, not half the circumference→ Distance, displacement and average speed
- Average speed over equal distances is not the plain average→ Distance, displacement and average speed
- Count whole laps first→ Distance, displacement and average speed
- Change minutes into hours before dividing→ Equations of motion for uniform acceleration
- The n-th second is one second, not n seconds→ Equations of motion for uniform acceleration
- Retardation enters with a minus sign→ Equations of motion for uniform acceleration
- Flat on one graph is not flat on the other→ Reading motion graphs
- Area gives displacement, not average velocity→ Reading motion graphs

Watch out for (7)
- Sizes add only when the directions match→ Adding vectors and resolving them
- Combine forces along one line first→ Adding vectors and resolving them
- sin and cos swap with the angle you measure from→ Adding vectors and resolving them
- The launch speed does not change the time in the air→ Free fall and horizontal launch
- Acceleration stays constant, speed does not→ Free fall and horizontal launch
- Uniform circular motion is accelerated→ Uniform circular motion
- Constant size is not constant acceleration→ Uniform circular motion
