Application of Derivatives — JEE Mains Mathematics
Application of Derivatives has 140 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 63 of them ask for a maximum or a minimum. The pages start with the derivative as a slope and a rate, then use its sign to see where a function rises and how many roots it has. The rest is about extreme values — local ones, the greatest and least on an interval, and word problems — ending with Rolle's theorem.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Tangents, Normals and Rates of Change
20 PYQsThe derivative as a slope and as a rate: tangents and normals to a curve, curves meeting at an angle, and quantities that change together over time.
Increasing and Decreasing Functions
27 PYQsReading where a function rises or falls from the sign of its derivative, choosing a parameter so a function is monotonic, and using monotonicity to compare values.
Counting Real Roots
10 PYQsUsing the derivative to count how many times a graph crosses the x-axis: a monotonic function crosses at most once, and otherwise the signs of the local maxima and minima decide.
Local Maxima and Minima
19 PYQsFinding and counting the local maxima and minima of a function from the sign changes of its derivative, including at corners and cusps where the derivative does not exist.
Functions Built from Their Extrema
14 PYQsWorking backwards: finding a polynomial, or a parameter, from where its maxima and minima are and from a limit or a value it must take.
Greatest and Least Values
26 PYQsThe absolute maximum and minimum of a function: on a closed interval by comparing critical points with the endpoints, and over a whole domain by limits, substitution or AM-GM.
Optimisation Problems
18 PYQsWord problems solved by the derivative: the largest area or volume under a constraint, and the shortest distance between a point, a line and a curve.
Rolle's and Mean Value Theorems
6 PYQsThe two theorems that guarantee a point where the derivative takes a given value, and how they count the zeros that f′ and f″ must have.

Watch out for (2)
- Differentiate before substituting→ Rates of change
- A normal parallel to a line→ Tangents and normals
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (3)
- Each piece is not the union→ The sign of the derivative
- Include the boundary value→ Parameters that make a function monotonic
- f″ > 0 is about f′, not f→ Increasing derivatives and order
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- At most one is not exactly one→ A monotonic function has at most one root
- Count the ends too→ Counting roots from the extreme values
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Even powers do not change sign→ Sign changes of the derivative
- A corner need not be an extremum→ Corners, cusps and piecewise functions
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Use every condition once→ A polynomial from its extrema
- Check the sign of the leading term→ Where a cubic's maximum and minimum sit
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The endpoints count→ Closed interval: critical points and endpoints
- Is the bound reached?→ Ranges and least values over a whole domain
Watch out for (2)
- Stay inside the allowed range→ Largest area or volume
- Only if they do not meet→ Shortest distances
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Check the hypotheses→ Rolle's theorem and the mean value theorem
- The zeros must be distinct→ Zeros of f′ and f″
