Complex Numbers — JEE Mains Mathematics
Complex Numbers has 142 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 59 of them describe a set of points: a line, a circle, an arc or a region. The pages start with the algebra of z and its conjugate, then polar form, the roots of unity and quadratics with complex roots. The last three pages turn equations into pictures, ending with the greatest and least distances over a region.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Algebra of Complex Numbers
28 PYQsWorking with z = x + iy directly: splitting a quotient into real and imaginary parts, solving equations in z and its conjugate, and using the rules for the modulus.
Polar Form, Argument and De Moivre
24 PYQsWriting a complex number by its length and angle, so that products add angles, powers multiply them, and multiplying by a unit complex number rotates the plane.
Roots of Unity
14 PYQsThe solutions of z to the power n equal to 1 — above all the cube roots 1, ω and ω squared — and the two facts that simplify every power of them.
Quadratic Equations with Complex Roots
17 PYQsQuadratics whose roots, or whose coefficients, are complex: solving them, using the sum and product of the roots, and finding high powers of the roots.
Lines and Circles in the Complex Plane
17 PYQsReading an equation in z as a straight line or a circle: equal distances from two points, linear equations in z and its conjugate, and circles given by a centre or by a ratio of distances.
Arcs and Conic Loci
16 PYQsLoci set by the angle at z — a quotient that is real, purely imaginary or of fixed argument — and loci that are ellipses, hyperbolas or parabolas.
Regions and Extreme Distances
26 PYQsSets of complex numbers given by inequalities — disks, half-planes, annuli — and the greatest or least distance from a point to such a set.
