Differentiation — JEE Mains Mathematics
Differentiation has 77 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 24 of them have a numerical answer rather than options. About half the questions compute a derivative, usually after a simplification, a substitution or a logarithm has made it short. The other half ask whether a derivative exists — where pieces join, where a modulus or a maximum has a corner, and where the greatest integer function jumps.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Chain Rule and Inverse-Trig Simplification
13 PYQsDifferentiating composite and inverse functions, and simplifying an inverse-trig or algebraic expression first so that its derivative is short.
Implicit, Parametric and Logarithmic Differentiation
10 PYQsFinding dy/dx and d²y/dx² when y is tied to x by an equation or a parameter, or is a power or product that is easier after taking logarithms.
Functional Equations and Derivative Constants
15 PYQsFinding a function from a relation it satisfies, and handling polynomials whose own derivative values appear as their coefficients.
Differentiability of Piecewise Functions
18 PYQsTesting whether a function built from pieces, a composite or a running maximum is differentiable, and finding a derivative at one point from the limit that defines it.
Counting Points of Non-Differentiability
21 PYQsCounting the points where a function with a modulus, a maximum, a minimum or the greatest integer function fails to be continuous or differentiable.
