Statistics — JEE Mains Mathematics
Statistics has 88 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 74 of them give or ask for a variance or a standard deviation. Almost every one rests on two totals, the sum of the values and the sum of their squares, and the first three pages build those totals from different starting points. The last two pages move to the mean deviation about the mean or the median, and to data given as a frequency table.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Variance from Sums and Shifts
17 PYQsGetting the mean and variance from given sums — of the values, of shifted squares or of pairwise products — and from a shift or scale of the data.
Finding Unknown Observations
19 PYQsRecovering missing observations from a given mean and variance: two unknowns give their sum and the sum of their squares, and a part of the data is found by subtracting known totals.
Correcting Data and Combining Groups
23 PYQsFixing the mean and variance after a wrongly recorded value is corrected or dropped, and finding the mean and variance of two groups put together.
Mean Deviation and Median
12 PYQsThe mean deviation of a data set about its mean, its median or its mode, often after finding unknown values from the mean and variance.
Frequency Distributions
17 PYQsMean, variance and median of data given as a frequency table, with single values or classes, including an unknown frequency and the mean deviation of a table.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Squares about a is not the variance→ Mean and variance from sums
- The sign of a is lost→ Shifts, scales and arithmetic progressions
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Keep the square of the mean→ Two unknowns from the mean and variance
- Divide by the new count→ A part of the data
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Rebuild the totals from the wrong data→ Correcting a wrong value
- Group variances do not simply average→ Combining two groups
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The mean deviation is not the SD→ Mean deviation about the mean
- Sort before you pick the median→ Mean deviation about the median or the mode
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The unknown frequency is in N too→ Mean and variance of a frequency table
- F stops before the median class→ Median and mean deviation of a table
