Trigonometric Equations — JEE Mains Mathematics
Trigonometric Equations has 51 past-year questions from 2021 to 2026, and 26 of them ask for nothing but the number of solutions in an interval. Most reduce to one ratio of one angle, by a quadratic, a product-to-sum step or a multiple-angle identity, and are then counted period by period. The rest turn on ranges and bounds: when a solution exists at all, and how to count roots that no formula gives.
Every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap in one printable document — answers shown, ready to share.
Subtopic notes
Quadratic in One Ratio
16 PYQsEquations that become a quadratic in sin θ, cos θ, sec θ or csc θ: solve it, discard the root outside the range, then count the angles in the interval.
Product-to-Sum and Multiple Angles
12 PYQsEquations with several angles: turn products into sums to reach cos A = cos B or a product equal to zero, or collapse everything into one ratio of a multiple angle such as 3x or 4x.
Range and Existence of Solutions
10 PYQsAn equation f(x) = k has a solution exactly when k lies in the range of f, so finding the range answers the question.
Exponential, Bounded and Graphical Equations
13 PYQsEquations that are not a polynomial in one ratio: powers with a trigonometric exponent, sides that meet only at their bounds, a line against the tangent graph, and moduli.

Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- Values ±1 and the endpoints→ Solve for the ratio, then count per period
- Do not cancel a ratio→ Two equations, domain limits and a sized interval
Watch out for (2)
- Subtract the common angles→ Reduce to cos A = cos B
- Check the original tangents→ Collapse to one multiple angle
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- The vertex may be outside→ The range decides whether a solution exists
- Squaring adds roots→ a cos x + b sin x = c by the auxiliary angle
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (2)
- A root in t may be out of range→ Powers with sin² and cos² in the exponent
- Check the part-branches at the ends→ Bounds, graphs and moduli
