Series: SSC CGL Reasoning
Series has 433 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank: 124 from the 2023 shifts, 123 from the 2024 shifts and 186 from the 2025 shifts, with 323 EASY, 109 MODERATE and one HARD. A little over half are letter series, about a third are number series, and the rest mix letters with numbers or ask which term is wrong. With 36 seconds a question, the marks go to a fixed order of checks: turn letters into positions, write the differences, divide when the terms grow fast, look for squares, cubes and primes, then split the odd and even places. Test the answer against the term after the gap before you mark it.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Letter Positions and Gaps
31 PYQsTurn each letter into its place in the alphabet, write the gaps between the numbers, and carry the gap on to the next letter.
Letter Clusters
119 PYQsA cluster series is three or four letter series running side by side: read the first letters down the list, then the second, then the third, and each column gives one letter of the answer.
Letter Series with Blanks
83 PYQsA string of letters with gaps is one short block written again and again, sometimes with one letter changing each time: find the block, and the blanks are whatever the block says belongs there.
Difference Series
75 PYQsWrite the gap between each pair of next-door terms under the series; the gaps are steady, grow by a fixed step, follow a list you know, or take turns between two rules.
Multiplication Series
52 PYQsWhen the terms grow or shrink fast, divide each term by the one before it: a steady ratio, a ratio with a small amount added, a multiplier that rises by one, or two operations taking turns.
Squares, Cubes and Primes
27 PYQsSome series are a list you already know: squares, cubes, one more or one less than them, the primes or the factorials. Recognising the list is faster than working out any difference.
Alphanumeric and Pattern Series
23 PYQsTerms that mix letters with numbers are two or three small series in one: solve the letters and the number separately. A few series instead shuffle the letters of a word or follow a known order.
Wrong Term Series
23 PYQsOne term in the series breaks the rule: find the rule from the terms that agree, predict each term in turn, and the first term that does not match is the wrong one.

Watch out for (5)
- Counting the starting letter as a step→ Letter positions and the gap rule
- Stopping at Z→ Letter positions and the gap rule
- Opposite letters add to 27, not 26→ Pairs of letters, one letter at a time
- Reading the pair as one jump→ Pairs of letters, one letter at a time
- Checking only the first blank→ Runs of the alphabet with blanks
Watch out for (5)
- Checking only the first letter→ Every letter moves by the same step
- Wrapping in the middle of a cluster→ Every letter moves by the same step
- Assuming all columns go the same way→ Each column has its own step
- Wrapping backwards→ Each column has its own step
- Forcing a fixed step on a growing column→ Steps that grow and vowel columns
Watch out for (4)
- Taking the first repeat you see as the block→ Find the repeating block
- Losing count of the places→ Find the repeating block
- Stopping once the first half fits→ Series built from two letters
- Hunting for an exact repeat that is not there→ Blocks where one letter moves
Formulas (1)
Watch out for (5)
- Not checking the term after the blank→ Steady and evenly growing differences
- Mixing up the sign of the difference→ Steady and evenly growing differences
- Counting 1 or 9 as a prime→ Differences that follow their own rule
- Skipping a prime→ Differences that follow their own rule
- Putting the blank in the wrong series→ Two rules taking turns
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Raising the ratio to the power n→ A steady ratio
- Checking the rule on one pair only→ Multiply, then add or take away a fixed amount
- Forcing a fixed multiplier→ The multiplier or the amount added changes
- Using the wrong multiplier for the missing step→ The multiplier or the amount added changes
- Using differences on a series that takes turns→ Operations that take turns, and terms built from earlier terms
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- Calling the list too early→ Squares, cubes and powers
- Plus one or minus one→ One step away from a square or a cube
- Numbers that look prime→ Primes, factorials and sums
Watch out for (3)
- Right letters, wrong number→ Letters and numbers as separate series
- Continuing the wrong series→ Two series woven together, and letters with their positions
- Using one order for every step→ Rearranged letters and word series
Watch out for (3)
- Blaming the term after the break→ Find the rule from the terms that agree
- Changing the rule to fit the wrong term→ Find the rule from the terms that agree
- Checking only one direction→ The wrong cluster or term
