Time and Work: SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude
Time and Work has 198 questions in the SSC CGL Tier I bank, and 36 of them come from the 2025 shifts. Of the 198, 103 are EASY, 90 MODERATE and only 5 HARD, so the marks go to speed: Tier I gives you about 36 seconds a question. Nearly every row is one idea in a different costume, a rate of so much of the job each day, whether the worker is a person, a team or a pipe. The fastest habit is to take the whole job as the LCM of the given times, so that every rate is a whole number of units. Pipes and cisterns cluster in the 2024 shifts, where almost every question in this chapter is about tanks.
The handout has every subtopic, worked example, formula and trap with answers shown. The formula sheet is the chapter’s formulas and traps alone, on one page.
Subtopic notes
Work Rates
52 PYQsA worker who finishes a job in n days does one n-th of it each day, so rates add when people work together and subtract when you need one worker's share.
Efficiency Ratios
13 PYQsEfficiency is work done per day, so a worker who is k times as efficient takes one k-th of the time, and a ratio of times is a ratio of efficiencies turned upside down.
Workers Joining and Leaving
21 PYQsWhen people work for different stretches of time, add each stretch's work (rate times days) and set the total equal to one whole job.
Working on Alternate Days
19 PYQsWhen workers take turns, find the work done in one full cycle of turns, count how many whole cycles fit, then finish the last part one day at a time.
Man-Days and Man-Hours
19 PYQsA job needs a fixed amount of labour, counted as workers times days (times hours a day), so more workers finish sooner in exact proportion.
Men, Women and Equivalent Workers
22 PYQsWhen men, women and boys work at different rates, turn every worker into one common unit, such as woman-days, and the question becomes a man-days question.
Pipes and Cisterns
52 PYQsA pipe is a worker whose job is one tankful: filling pipes add their rates, and emptying pipes and leaks take theirs away.

Formulas (4)
Watch out for (8)
- Adding the days instead of the rates→ Workers together: add the one-day rates
- Using product over sum for three workers→ Workers together: add the one-day rates
- Marking the part done when the part left is asked→ Part of the job done in a given time
- Scaling the days the wrong way→ Part of the job done in a given time
- Forgetting to halve the pair total→ One worker's time from the team's time
- Subtracting the times→ One worker's time from the team's time
- Sharing the pay in the ratio of days→ Sharing the pay by work done
- Giving a helper an equal share→ Sharing the pay by work done
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (3)
- Not flipping the ratio→ Efficiency ratio and time ratio
- Reading 60% more efficient as 60% less time→ Efficiency ratio and time ratio
- Dividing the gap by k→ A faster worker who takes fewer days
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (4)
- Taking the days for the rest as the whole time→ One worker starts and another finishes
- Giving the days after the change when the total is asked→ A team that changes partway
- Forgetting the old members in a joiner's rate→ A team that changes partway
- Taking the leaving days off the leaver's own time→ Leaving a few days before the end
Watch out for (5)
- Rounding a part day up to a whole day→ Taking turns on alternate days
- Ignoring who starts→ Taking turns on alternate days
- Taking one cycle too many→ Taking turns on alternate days
- Putting the helpers' day first→ Helpers who join every few days
- Reading a day off after every 4 days as a 4-day rhythm→ Helpers who join every few days
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (5)
- Working the proportion the wrong way→ Workers times days is fixed for a job
- Giving the total when "how many more" is asked→ Workers times days is fixed for a job
- Ignoring a change in hours a day→ Hours a day and part of a job
- Putting the part of the job on the wrong side→ Hours a day and part of a job
- Starting the leaving sequence one day early→ Workers added or leaving partway
Formulas (2)
Watch out for (5)
- Averaging the two teams' times→ Whole teams working together
- Setting men equal to women without the days→ Converting men into women
- Converting the wrong way→ Converting men into women
- Setting the teams equal when the days differ→ Two mixed teams doing the same job
- Not checking with the second team→ Two mixed teams doing the same job
Formulas (3)
Watch out for (6)
- Adding an outlet's rate→ Inlets and outlets open together
- Answering in the wrong unit→ Inlets and outlets open together
- Taking the extra hours as the leak's time→ Finding a leak from the slower fill
- Multiplying the joint time by k instead of k + 1→ One pipe so many times as fast as another
- Keeping the wrong root→ One pipe so many times as fast as another
- Running whole cycles with an outlet in them→ Pipes opened or closed partway
